Background
I
am a Registered Clinical Counsellor
in the province of British Columbia. I have an Honours Degree in Psychology
from
University
of Toronto
and I received
my M.A. in Educational Psychology. Since 1981 I have taken further graduate
and post-graduate level training in assessment and counselling therapy approaches.
In addition to my counselling private
practice I have worked as part of an interdisciplinary
teams,
at Lifemark Health, Columbia
Rehabilitation Centre (Vancouver) and the Pain Management Clinic (Toronto) for the past 23 years. I am
presently the counsellor for
the Occupational
Rehabilitation
program which assists clients who have sustained
work-related injuries and suffer from chronic
pain and stress-related concerns. Many of
the issues that these clients present are
similar to the ones that clients bring with
them to my private practice.
With regard to my counsellors training, I successfully
completed a two year training program in the theory
and practice
of Family Systems Therapy, at Pacific Coast Family
Institute. I have also trained in several other approaches,
including:
- Basic and advanced training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) (including The Strategic Developmental Model© for EMDR developed by Maureen Kitchur)
- Solution-Focused Therapy
- Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT)
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT)
- Therapeutic Hypnosis
Individuals
I
have used the above counselling approaches in my work with individuals who
have experienced trauma, have addictive behaviours, are depressed, experience
excessive anxiety,
or live with chronic pain.
Couples
I
also work with distressed couples
who find themselves relating to eachother
in
couterproductive ways and have difficulty
understanding why.
With all approaches that I use, my goal is to show clients how to access their own resources to gain self-acceptance and to make healthy changes in their lives. I recognize that there are occasions when clients may benefit from the acquisition of skills to enhance the quality of their relationships with themselves and others. Association Involvement: I was a Delegate Counsel member of The British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors for several years. I am past chair of the Continuing Education Committee for this organization. In 1999 the association honoured me with the Volunteer of the Year award for my work in advancing the mission of the association through volunteer efforts.
I
was one of the main planners
of a National Conference of Counsellors
that took place in Vancouver in May
of 2007.
In
addition to my work with BCACC, I am the Director
of Absolute
Balance Counselling & Consulting
Ltd., the developer of CounsellingBC.com--
BC's most prominent and well-respected
online resource relating to counselling and
psychotherapy as practiced by Registered Clinical
Counsellors, Certified Canadian Counsellors,
